A financial citation needs a data-rights clock
ChatGPT for Financial Services can cite premium datasets, but a banker still needs the data's reporting time, access basis and sharing rights before a number enters client work.
OpenAI's financial-services plan can point a banker to the table behind a number. It cannot, by that citation alone, tell the banker whether the number is current enough for the decision or may be shared in a client pitchbook. Those are separate checks, and the product's own financial-data instructions say to check dates and source terms.
My rule for a cited financial answer is three fields, not one: where the figure came from, when that dataset observed it, and what this user may do with it. I have not tested the plan or a firm's configuration. This is editorial judgment about the review boundary, not a claim that OpenAI's access controls failed.
ChatGPT for Financial Services hosts some data and connects other data
In its September 10 launch, OpenAI says it indexes and hosts included premium data from providers such as Daloopa and PitchBook. The separate plan guide says included datasets are enabled by default, require no separate provider contract, and may cover less than the provider's full product. Connected sources, by contrast, can depend on a firm's existing subscription, the user's provider entitlement and workspace permissions.
That distinction is useful. An analyst can receive two cited figures in one answer, yet the access basis behind each need not be the same. A source link identifies evidence; it does not explain whether the result came from included coverage or a connected subscription, nor what the firm's provider agreement permits downstream. The guide expressly asks teams to retain source references and follow restrictions on sharing, redistribution and model training.
OpenAI also says firms can create multiple workspaces to enforce information barriers, with role controls for apps and data. That is a promised control surface, not a test result. Before relying on a generated research note across desks, I would ask the workspace owner to demonstrate the relevant boundary with the actual roles and datasets. A polished citation is no substitute for that access test.
Daloopa's delay makes a cited number a timed observation
The plan guide lists a 24-hour delay and a 3,000-datapoint monthly per-user limit for included Daloopa data. It also lists a 15-minute delay for Nasdaq pricing supplied through FMP. These are OpenAI's stated September 2026 product conditions, not delays I measured. Coverage and schedules can change.
A citation to a Daloopa table could be perfectly faithful and still be unsuitable for a time-sensitive comparison. Likewise, a 15-minute delayed price may be fine in a historical note and wrong for a live execution decision. The reviewer needs the reporting period, provider update time where available and the answer's retrieval time. If the product cannot expose one of them, write the gap beside the figure rather than calling the citation verified in full.
This is why I would keep source accuracy and decision fitness in different columns. An agent backtest is not a live track record; a cited delayed price is not a live quote either. Both may be good evidence for a narrower question.
A research receipt should travel into the pitchbook
OpenAI describes administrator-published Excel, Word and PowerPoint templates that turn analysis into models and client materials. That is exactly where a source citation can become a final-looking number without its conditions travelling along. I would attach a small receipt to every material figure: dataset and cited table, as-of period and retrieval time, included or connected access basis, permitted audience and a named human reviewer. This is a proposed practice, not a workflow I deployed at Trigent or for a client.
The last field matters more than an extra model score. The plan guide tells users to review outputs before client or investment use; the source's terms and the firm's policy govern redistribution. A reviewer who cannot establish those rights should stop the figure at internal research, even if the model has retrieved it correctly. The result may still be useful as a lead to check against an authorised source.
What's in it for you
- Ask which of the plan's sources are included coverage and which inherit your firm's connected-provider entitlements before a cross-desk rollout.
- Put source period, observed delay and permitted audience beside each material figure; keep an unknown field visible instead of silently treating it as current.
- Test the actual workspace and role boundary with your own data before exporting generated client material.
A financial citation locates a number; the data-rights clock decides whether that number belongs in the decision or the document.
